I'm sorry that I haven't blogged in a while, but I have been involved in a local production called Urban Aphrodite: An Exploration of Erotic Literature By Women. It was put on by dAdA Productions. I wrote one of the poems that was performed by the actors and I also danced in a choreographed piece called the Kama Sutra. I had a blast. My poem was well received by the audience as well as my dancing.
I was very nervous about the dancing part. One reason is because I foolishly volunteered after one of the original dancers said she couldn't make the Saturday performance. I say foolishly because it had been YEARS since I've done modern dancing, much less performed modern dancing in front of an audience. Secondly, when I did dance it was at least 60 pounds ago -- yes I said SIXTY POUNDS! I can't believe I can still leap my ass off of the ground, but I did it. The choreographer was very pleased with me. The dance consists of three women (two very skinny, size 3 women and me who is more uh...rubenesque.) The concept is that we are hieroglyphics who dance and end up in various positions of the Kama Sutra. It was a very fun piece to perform even though each day after practice I walked like the Tin Man. Man, thank goodness for ketoprofen. The director and the choreographer said that my body size was voluptous and it went with the theme of the night which is women's sexuality and erotica. There are certainly plenty of men who like a big girl and before I was married, I made sure that I met as many as I could.
The whole cast was dressed provocatively and so was yours truly. My costume included a pink, feather trimmed corsette, form fitting black pants and a pink and black spiked collar that glowed in the dark. The best part of doing the production was being around talented women. It was great to see woman getting together and expressing themselves through their art. I am so happy that I was a part of Urban Aphrodite. I can't wait to do it again! (Although, my knees can.)
